The History Department at Chatham Grammar are excited to announce that Hallie Rubenhold, author of The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper will be spending the day with GCSE and A Level students next term.
Rubenhold has dedicated herself to taking the focus of 1888 away from the serial killer, Jack the Ripper, by bringing the lives of his victims to the forefront. Her book has received great praise from the academic community and has sparked a debate about how these events should be taught in schools.
The History Book Group were very excited about Rubenhold’s visit, and have chosen to read her book this term. All were moved to tears by the story of Polly Nicholls and shocked at how common homelessness was in nineteenth century London. We will continue to read about the lives of the remaining women during Term 2
The History Department would like to encourage all GCSE students to purchase a copy of Rubenhold’s book ready for her visit, as this will be a great opportunity to have their book signed by Rubenhold herself..
