The first British Astronaut visits Chatham Grammar

Helen Sharman visited Chatham Grammar on Tuesday 10th May.

Helen became the first British Astronaut in May 1991, aged 27, when she launched on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. She spent 8 days orbiting the Earth, living and working on the Mir Space Station (in modern Russian, “Mir” can be translated as “peace” or “world”.)

Helen brilliantly described the meticulous training, preparation, learning Russian, launch and landing, how weightlessness feels, her science experiments, the team spirit and readjusting to life on Earth to our students. This was of particular interest to the students in Sharman House (inspired by Helen herself) who had the opportunity to ask questions and delve into the mind of the first British astronaut.

We are excited to share photos of this amazing visit with you all very soon!
